What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

AI is a scientific discipline that focuses on building machines that show intelligence—cognitive functions that humans display such as learning and problem-solving. 🤖

According to Gartner, AI uses advanced analysis and algorithms to train machines to interpret events, support and automate decisions and take actions.

AI uses principles and approaches from several other fields such as computer science, information engineering, statistics, linguistics and psychology, among others.

Although AI was founded as a discipline in 1956, it has gained more popularity recently due to advances in big data technologies and computing.

What are the applications of AI?

AI has endless potential and applications across various industries such as finance, healthcare and manufacturing.

The Harvard Business Review published a survey conducted by TCS (Tata Consultancy Services) to understand how companies use AI. The results showed that AI is used to:

  • Detect and prevent security breaches
  • Fix technology issues faced by users
  • Reduce production management work
  • Check for internal compliance

Some examples of its applications include:

  • Recommendation engines for TV shows
  • Autonomous vehicles
